Serum Concentrations of Betatrophin and Its Association with Indirect Indices of Insulin Resistance and Beta Cell Function in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Abstract: Introduction Data underline the role of betatrophin in glucose homeostasis. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by insulin resistance (IR). The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship of serum betatrophin concentrations with indirect indices of IR and insulin secretion in women with PCOS, compared to the control group. Methods The study group comprised 43 women with PCOS and 16 controls. IR was assessed by HOMA-IR and Matsuda index. Insulin secretion was evaluated with HOMA-B. An ora… Show more

“…Although circulating ANGPTL8 levels have been reported to be related to IR [26], T2DM [2730], obesity [27, 30], PCOS [3133], nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) [34], and MetS [12, 35], ANGPTL8 is mainly secreted and expressed by hepatocytes. It reduces the cleavage of triglycerides by inhibiting the activity of lipoprotein esterase and increases the level of triglycerides.…”

“…Very recently, Calan et al have reported that betatrophin levels were increased in PCOS women and were associated with HOMA-IR, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and free-testosterone [ 19 ]. In addition, another study also found that circulating betatrophin was associated with IR in PCOS women [ 20 ]. Based upon the data from recent reports and our present study, it is reasonable to speculate that betatrophin may contribute to the development of chronic inflammation and IR.…”

“…A subsequent study by the same research team found that betatrophin concentrations were not associated with C-peptide levels in patients with T2DM, whereas in non-diabetic individuals a positive relationship between betatrophin and C-peptide concentrations was established [9]. An association between betatrophin, insulin resistance and beta cell function has been observed in other diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome [10].…”
