Seroprevalence of Peste Des Petits Ruminants Virus from Samples Collected in Different Regions of Tanzania in 2013 and 2015

Abstract: Sero-surveillance was conducted to determine seroprevalence of peste des petits ruminant's virus (PPRV) in sheep and goats population of Tanzania using samples collected in 2013 and 2015. A total of 3,838 samples were collected from villages in 14 of the 25 mainland regions. Samples were tested by competitive ELISA for detection of antibodies against PPRV. Overall, 998 of the samples were found to be positive for antibodies against PPR, giving a seroprevalence of 27.1%. In this study, there was no statistical … Show more

“…The overall seroprevalence of PPR in this study was 74.6%. This seroprevalence is in line with findings from a recent study that analyzed samples from 14 regions of Tanzania, with Arusha region having an overall seroprevalence of 71.1% (Kgotlele et al 2016). Other studies done in northern Tanzania have found PPR seroprevalence of 45.5% in 2008 (Swai et al 2009) and 22.1% in 2008 .…”

“…In East Africa, PPR was detected in Kenya and Uganda in 2007, while in Tanzania, it was officially confirmed in 2008 (Kivaria et al 2009;Swai et al 2009). The disease is considered endemic in Tanzanian domestic sheep and goat populations (Torsson et al 2017;Kgotlele et al 2016).…”

“…In southern Tanzania, in the Mtwara region bordering Mozambique, 31% of sampled small ruminants had antibodies to PPRV [47]. A recent study analysing samples from 14 different regions of Tanzania described an overall seroprevalence of 27.1%, with regions varying from 2.4% (Kagera) to 72.8% (Morogoro), demonstrating the varying level of seroprevalence within the country [23]. …”

“…PPR was first confirmed in Tanzania in 2008 [21], but a retrospective study on samples collected in the northern districts found antibodies to PPRV were probably already present in 2004 [22]. The disease has since spread to the southern parts of the country and is now considered endemic in the domestic, small ruminant population in the whole country [2325]. CCPP, FMD, BT, and BVD are endemic in Tanzania [24], however studies on FMD and BT have only been performed on large ruminants.…”

“…Serological tests performed in the reviewed studies were mostly ELISA techniques such as the competitive PPRV specific anti-H monoclonal based ELISA (c-ELISA) as recommended by the OIE (27,28,39,43,(48)(49)(50). The c-ELISA detects antibodies to confirm that the animal has been exposed to PPRV at some point in their lifetime.…”
