Seroprevalence and risk factors associated with bovine herpesvirus 1 and bovine viral diarrhea virus in North-Eastern Mexico

Abstract: Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) are well known etiological agents of cattle that produce important economic losses due to reproductive failures and calf mortality, as well as enteric and respiratory disease. Tamaulipas is located northeast of Mexico, an important cattle production and the principal exporter of calf and heifer to the United States. The objectives of this study were to estimate the seroprevalence of BoHV-1 and of BVDV, and to determine the effects of risk fac… Show more

“…This result agrees with those reported by Segura-Correa et al . [31], who demonstrate statistical differences between the rural districts in North Eastern of Mexico. The variation of seroprevalence in different regions may be due to differences in cattle population age, cattle density, herd size, housing systems, biosecurity, disease control measures, management practices, and type of breeding of the animals, which in general could be important risk factors in transmission and persistence of BVDV [31,32].…”

“…Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) is a virus, which belongs to the family Herpesviridae, subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae, and the genus Varicellovirus [1]. BoHV-1 causes important cattle diseases such as infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) and infectious pustular vulvovaginitis (IPV) in cows and infectious pustular balanoposthitis (IPB) in bulls worldwide [24]. BoHV-1 infection causes mild to acute or chronic severe respiratory disease complex with a variety of apparent clinical manifestations.…”

“…BoHV-1 infection causes mild to acute or chronic severe respiratory disease complex with a variety of apparent clinical manifestations. However, reproductive losses are the main economical significances of BoHV-1 infection [46]. The symptoms of inflammation in respiratory and genital organs and abortion are among the clinical signs of BoHV-1 [7].…”
