Sero-prevalence of Transfusion Transmissible Infections among Voluntary Blood Donors of Khulna Medical College Hospital

Abstract: Transfusion transmitted infections (TTI) are a great concern of safety for patients. Blood transfusion is a lifesaving procedure but always caries a potential risk of infections. The present study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of infectious disease markers and frequency in males and females of various age groups among healthy blood donors. A retrospective review of donor record over a period of 2 years between 2015 to2016 was done at the department of transfusion medicine Khulna medical college Hospit… Show more

“…The seroprevalence of HCV in the present study was 0.81%, which is high when compared with a study from Bangladesh 27 (0.03%). Our finding was on the lower side when compared to previous studies from Sudan 28 (1.40%), Pakistan 29 (3.26%), Kenya 30 (3.21%), and Nigeria 21 (3.6%).…”

“…On the other hand, studies from Bangladesh 26 (0.20%), USA 35 (0.16%), Saudi Arabia 36 (0.04%), and India 32 (0.05%) reported a lower prevalence rate for syphilis in blood donors. Conversely, it is lower than 5.72% in Sudan, 27 3.1% in Nigeria, 21 and 1.9% in Tanzania. 11 …”

“…The prevalence of HCV infection among blood donors in this study was 0.00%, which is slightly comparable with previous studies (0.2%) in south west Ethiopia 33 and elsewhere in the world; 0.06% in Pakistan, 34 and 0.03% in Bangladesh. 35 On the other hand, this finding is much lower than previous studies done in Nigeria (2.5%) 27 and Kenya (3.21%). 36 The wide variations of HCV sero-prevalence in different studies might be due to differences in risk behaviors such as injecting drug use and sharing objects for skin piercing between different geographical areas, use of different methods for testing, and use of different generation of ELISA test kits, having different sensitivities and specificities and use of different sample size.…”
