Sensitization to occupational allergens in hairdressing apprentices diagnosed already before entering vocational training

Abstract: Background: Hairdressers are occupationally exposed to many allergenic and irritating substances. Additionally, hairdressing apprentices are exposed to the same allergens as professional hairdressers, due to the fact that vocational training starts in the beginning of the education. This study was undertaken to investigate early occurrence of sensitization to occupational allergens in hairdressing apprentices before the onset of the vocational training. Material and Methods: Three hundred and seven hairdressin… Show more

“…As a result, hairdressers are frequently occupationally exposed to phthalates contained in beauty products [20,21]. Health complications that affected various mucosal surfaces and oral and skin lesions, either independently or concurrently, have been significantly increased in the hairdressing apprentices [12,[22][23][24]. Dysfunction of pulmonary, immune, and other systems [10,[25][26][27] have been among various potential health impacts often ascribed to these exposures.…”

“…Notwithstanding this limitation, 6 of the 43 studies lacking cross‐tabulation (plus all four studies lacking objective pulmonary function tests) provided partial associational data, in which either: 1) the proportion of (presumed) occupational rhinitis cases developing occupational asthma (or vice versa) is reported (albeit in the absence of background rates); or 2) the sequence of development of nasal and chest symptoms are tabulated. Individual study characteristics of excluded studies, including study designs, principal exposure(s), health endpoint(s), number of subjects, and measure(s) of effect appear in Supplemental Tables S1‐S4. Briefly summarizing relevant data from these excluded studies, among workers undergoing objective pulmonary function testing, more than half of those diagnosed with occupational asthma to diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), lupin ( Lupinus angustifolius ) flour, or ammonium persulfate (eg, hairdressers) also gave histories consistent with occupational rhinitis .…”

“…W roku 2008 podjęto pierwsze w Polsce badania wśród fryzjerów (zarówno tych w trakcie edukacji, jak i pracujących zawodowo), jednak były one ograniczone do identyfikacji czynników ryzyka i epidemiologii chorób dermatologicz-nych [1,2].
