Sensitive Formaldehyde Detection with QCM Sensor Based on PAAm/MWCNTs and PVAm/MWCNTs

Abstract: Two formaldehyde detection methods are proposed by applying composite film quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors. QCM sensor coated with PAAm/MWCNTs and PVAm/ MWCNTs shows excellent characteristics of lower limit and high sensitivity. The lower limit of PVAm/MWCNTs is 0.5 ppm, and its detection sensitivity is 0.74 ppm/Hz. Upon working at different concentrations of formaldehyde and fabricating in different proportions, the reuse performance, gas selectivity, and response at room temperature show contrastin… Show more

“…The sensors were quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs) (SEIKO EG&G, AT-cut, 9 MHz). QCM AT-cut gas sensors are able to measure gases as shown by many studies [21], [22]. Those sensors have good frequency stability and their sensor characteristics can be easily changed just by coating them with different sensing films [23].…”

“…5 However, in the environment, gaseous formaldehyde can cause harm to organisms if they are continuously exposed to even low levels of formaldehyde. 6,7 It can damage the respiratory and digestive tracts, kidneys, liver, and lungs, which can lead to death. [8][9][10] Current methods to detect formaldehyde include spectrophotometry, 11 fluorometry, 12 and chromatography.…”
