Sensitive Electrochemical Determination of Folic Acid Using ex–situ Prepared Bismuth Film Electrodes

Abstract: The electrochemical behavior of folic acid (FA), at the electrochemically prepared ex situ bismuth film (BiF) on glassy carbon electrode, clearly indicates electrocatalytic nature of the prepared film toward FA reduction (at -0.55 V). Scanning electron microscopy is used for morphological characterization of the prepared BiF. Accordingly, we establishing an electrochemical procedure based on square wave cathodic stripping voltammetry, preceded by accumulation of FA on the BiF electrode (BiFE). This analytical … Show more

“…These forms are not so strongly adsorbed at a solid bismuth microelectrode and consequently reduction peak current of FA decreases. The influence of pH in the presented study is comparable to that reported in that suggests that the mechanism of reduction of folic acid is the same as for ex situ bismuth film electrode.…”

“…Various eco‐friendly working electrodes replacing commonly used hanging mercury drop and film electrodes were proposed for folic acid determination. Among them a wide range of modified , amalgam and metal film electrodes were reported. Since 2000 when bismuth film electrodes were reported for the first time , bismuth has been used as an attractive and popular electrode material for determination of many inorganic and organic species .…”

“…The high selectivity of this method, associated with the low cost of the analytes and reduced amount of residues are reasonable arguments towards the development of electrochemical sensors for the detection and quantification of FA. Up until now, there are several approaches for the development of electrochemical sensors for the same analyte including associations of different metallic or carbon-based nanomaterials: NiO and graphene, lanthanum doped ZnO with graphene, Au nanoparticles, ZnO-CuO nanoplates, ZnO-carbon nanotubes, Bi layer deposited mainly on glassy carbon or carbon paste electrodes [10][11][12][13][14][15]. An alternative to the conventional electrodes that are mainly used for experimental work in research laboratories, is the use of disposable commercial or home-made screen-printed electrodes that can simplify and optimize the testing protocols, while also diminishing the analysis cost.…”
