Self-employment by gender in the EU: convergence and clusters

Abstract: This paper studies the convergence of self-employment by gender in the European Union, through tests for the order of integration and cluster analysis, in order to investigate the occurrence of two types of convergence: between genders and among European countries. The paper makes two contributions to the literature: 1) theoretically, it provides useful insights into the macroeconomic determinants of self-employment; 2) methodologically, it uses unit roots, fractional integration and cluster analysis to assess… Show more

“…Thus, the identification of these two clubs of convergence should not come as a surprise. However, differences in SE across countries are not only associated with the structure of national economies but also, with the characteristics of the national population, as [13] observe for gender issues. These authors analyse whether there is SE rate convergence between genders, providing evidence of the difference between core and peripheral countries in Europe (See [11] for the analysis of institutional features as determinants of national differences in SE rates).…”

“…Likewise, improvement innovation is the provision of the best alternative innovations that are the most efficient and effective for a process or a product. Something that is innovated requires consideration for the product creation process, then there is also the need to consider the existence of innovations that can be spread and innovations that are adopted from other people's products (Ahn & Yu, 2020;Faria, Cuestas, Gil-Alana & Mourelle, 2020;Dinh et al, 2020).…”

“…The methodology used in this paper is based primarily on cluster analysis. The ultimate goal is the classification of EU countries in order to determine homogeneous groups of countries according to the base indices of selected indicators of the agricultural economic performance (Faria et al, 2021). Based on the authors' opinion, after searching the literature, some indicators were selected in order to find out similarities between EU countries according to indicators' values during particular periods of time.…”
