Self-Assembly of Subnanometer-Diameter Single-Wall MoS 2 Nanotubes

Abstract: We report on the synthesis, structure, and self-assembly of single-wall subnanometer-diameter molybdenum disulfide tubes. The nanotubes are up to hundreds of micrometers long and display diverse self-assembly properties on different length scales, ranging from twisted bundles to regularly shaped "furry" forms. The bundles, which contain interstitial iodine, can be readily disassembled into individual molybdenum disulfide nanotubes. The synthesis was performed using a novel type of catalyzed transport reaction … Show more

“…Layered nanotubes can be single walled [12][13][14][15] or multiwalled. [1][2][3][4] In some cases these nanotubes are nanoscrolls, [16][17][18] or jelly roll nanotubes, meaning one layer is scrolled to form a tube ͑the cross section is a spiral͒.…”

“…They are produced in a one-step synthetic process, making them much simpler to produce than the previous molybdenum-chalcogenide nanotubes, such as MoS 2 I 1/3 . 11 The stoichiometries synthesized so far are Mo 6 S 3 I 6 , 5 Mo 6 S 4.5 I 4.5 , 8 and Mo 6 S 2 I 8 , all of which have excellent mechanical and electrical properties. Local density approximation band structure calculations of the Mo 6 S 3 I 6 nanowire predict it to be semimetallic, 12 and Ohmic behavior of this stoichiometry has been observed.…”

“…5 These nanotubes have an average outer diameter of about 25 nm. MoS 2 and WS 2 nanotubes have also been synthesized by chemical transportation using iodine as the transport agent, [6][7][8] by the activation method ͑acid treatment following by sonication͒, 9 and by template synthesis. 10 The yield of nanotubes usually is in the range of 15-20% by these approaches.…”
