Self-assembled monoterpenoid phenol as vapor phase atmospheric corrosion inhibitor of carbon steel

Abstract: The inhibition efficiency of сarvacrol as a non toxic volatile corrosion inhibitor for the temporary protection of mild steel was investigated. Weight loss measurements were used to measure the corrosion rate in the absence and presence of these volatile inhibitor compounds. It is demonstrated that the corrosion rate of steel decreases as its concentration increases, and the process of formation of films from the vapor phase has a long-term character. Atomic force microscopy (SEM) revealed that a protective fi… Show more

“…However, the inhibitor extracted from a waste without harm to plants and environment was seldom reported. Actually, in the present ecological context, plants, food, forest or agro-industrial wastes extracts appear as an alternative to fulfil the conditions of REACH regulation and European directives on the wastewater reject [50][51][52][53][54][55].…”

“…Over the recent years, the use of naturally occurring substances of plant origin, otherwise called "green corrosion inhibitors" has received much more attention because they are incredible sources of natural organic compounds, which are environmentally acceptable, inexpensive, readily available and renewable sources of materials [9][10][11][12][13].…”

“…This result indicates that APE contains different classes of organic substances in their composition, which can act as corrosion inhibitors. [33,34]. The effect of 2-phenylacetaldehyde and hexanal on the corrosion behavior of steel was studied [35] through weight loss, electrochemical, SEM, AFM, quantum chemical calculation methods.…”

“…It was found that the inhibition effect of 2-phenylacetaldehyde was associated with layerby-layer mechanism formation of a protective film. Interestingly, the electrochemical and spectroscopic studies have revealed that unsaturated aldehydes (2-phenylacetaldehyde) and phenolic compounds (thymol and carvacrol) can polymerize on metallic surfaces and show excellent corrosion protection [33][34][35]. The antioxidant activity of the extract was analyzed in several methods because the evaluation of antioxidant properties of plants cannot be carried out accurately by a single universal method.…”
