Selenium content of Spanish infant formulae and human milk: Influence of protein matrix, interactions with other trace elements and estimation of dietary intake by infants

Abstract: SummaryThe Selenium content of infant formula varies as a result of differences in the amount of intrinsic selenium compounds. Manufacturers have been gradually changing the protein profile of infant formula to reflect human milk contents more closely. Because of these variations in infant formula composition and their potential impact on selenium content, this trace element was analysed with regard to the different protein sources. The aims of this study were to determine the selenium content in infant formula… Show more

“…Fingernail and toenail samples were treated with sub-boiling nitric acid in a high-pressure teflon digestion vessel using a microwave digestion system (Ethos Plus, Millestone, Sorisole, Italy). Selenium (ng/g of nail), copper and zinc (μg/g of nail) concentrations were measured by a Perkin Elmer Analyst 800 atomic absorption spectrometer (Norwalk, CT, USA) as previously described [28,29]. …”

A Perkin Elmer AAnalyst 800 atomic absorption spectrometer (Norwalk, CT, USA), equipped with transverse-heated graphite atomizer, Zeeman background corrector, and AS-800 autosampler, was used for the measurement of Se at 196.0 nm with a spectral band width of 2.0 nm as used elsewhere [10]. An electrodeless discharge lamp (Perkin Elmer) was used as a light source operated at 280 mA.…”

“…Se content, as determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) [9] , was the same in the two diets ( ϳ 0.5 mg/kg diet), covering the recommended intake for rats. Inside each group, animals were further divided into three subgroups, based on the different fatty acid composition of the diets: soy bean oil-animal fat mixture, rich in saturated fatty acids (S), soy bean oil-olive oil mixture, rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (M), and soy bean oil, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (P).…”
