Selection and characterization of probiotic lactic acid bacteria and its impact on growth, nutrient digestibility, health and antioxidant status in weaned piglets

Abstract: The present study was aimed to develop an effective probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from piglet feces and in vitro characterization of probiotic properties. To confirm host-species specificity of probiotics, the efficacy of isolated LAB on growth, nutrient utilization, health and antioxidant status was observed in early weaned piglets. A total of 30 LAB were isolated from feces of five healthy piglets (28d old). All isolates were Gram positive, cocco-bacilli and catalase negative. Out of thirty LAB isolat… Show more

“…For most of patients an antimicrobial therapy is not indicated. Positive effects on Salmonella infections have been described for S. boulardii [32,39,51,52], bacterial monostrain probiotics [7,40,41,43,53,54] and multistrain probiotics [7,55]. The present study confirms that S. boulardii and Lc.…”

“…Acid survivability of the identified species was assessed on the basis of the method described by Dowarah et al (25). To evaluate the tolerance capacity under acidic pH condition, the acidic pH of MRS broth was adjusted to pH 3.0 and 6.5 using 1 M HCl.…”

“…However, the benefit of probiotic as growth promoter and therapeutic antimicrobial is highly variable in weaned piglets. There are evidences showing that probiotic administration did not affect piglet growth performance and nutrient digestibility (Barba‐Vidal et al ; Dowarah et al ). It is note that postweaning diarrhoea and growth retardation mainly relates to intestinal microbiota disorders, especially rapid growth of pathogens.…”
