The current paper presents a seismic performance assessment of a low-story RC building through the time history analysis and a retrofitting proposal accordingly. The seismic analyses were repeated for the retrofitted building model and the effectiveness of the retrofitting proposal was determined. In the first stage of the study, the design project and material characteristics of the building were examined. Using these data, a 3D model of the building was prepared on the Midas Gen program. Next, a total of 11 earthquake records were selected and scaled for nonlinear time history analysis. Using the analysis results with the codes written on the Matlab program, the damage states of the load-bearing members were determined and the building’s performance was measured. The results indicated that some load-bearing members have insufficient strength and a retrofitting proposal was made accordingly. A building model was then prepared considering the retrofitting proposal and the retrofitted building model was found to satisfy controlled damage performance criteria envisaged in the local seismic code. It is believed that the methodology presented in this study can be effectively used in similar buildings with poor structural strength for identifying structural performance and selecting proper retrofitting practices.

The great rocking of building structures and the occurrence of liquefaction in water-saturated soil on river banks are generally caused by earthquake shaking. The waves generated by the earthquake are the main cause of the shaking. In order to show the effect of ground motion earthquake shaking on the response of structures and liquefaction processes, it is necessary to analyze the structure and liquefaction as well as the time history of artificial earthquake ground motions. An artificial time history for liquefaction analysis can be developed based on spectral matching to the target spectrum generated by a deterministic seismic hazard analysis. Therefore, the time history recovered from the analysis can be said to be derived from a deterministic procedure. The analysis of liquefaction with time history aims to see the potential for liquefaction in the Palu region of Central Sulawesi by developing the time history of the bedrock. The time history of the bedrock is then spread over the ground surface. The propagation of time-historical waves to the ground surface can cause liquefaction events in the soil layer. It was found that liquefaction occurred in the Palu region, especially in the Anutapura Hospital building. No other liquefaction potential analysis studies were found in the region. Most civil structures exhibit nonlinear behavior during moderate to severe earthquakes. Consequently, inelastic analysis is needed for seismic design. Several dynamic and static analysis methods are available for the assessment and design of engineering structures. Two of the available methods in terms of nonlinear dynamic time history analysis and nonlinear static analysis, which is known as pushover analysis, are employed herein to comprehensively study and investigate the seismic performance of multi-story building structures with different floor systems. Moreover, the study is extended to assess the actual values of the response reduction/modification factor (R-factor) for each building model, then evaluate the values with the code-recommended design values. Three-dimensional finite element building models with 5, 10 and 15 stories are developed for the evaluation process. The advanced computer program ETABS is used for developing and analyzing the buildings considering material and geometrical nonlinearity. A suit of seven earthquake records is considered and scaled according to the ASCE-16 seismic design code to excite the building models. The obtained results evidently reveal that the type of floor slab significantly impacts the seismic response of the building. More specifically, the effects of floor slabs on seismic demands are more evident in low- and mid-rise buildings. In addition, the type of slab system and height of the building have more influence on the response modification factors, especially for low-rise building models.
