Seismicity has fractal structures in space, time, and magnitude distributions, as expressed by the fractal dimension D, Omori's exponent p, and the b value, respectively. We expect that there is correlation among these scaling parameters. Aki (1981) speculated that there is a relation D = 3b/c (c = 1.5) between the b value and the fractal dimension D of fault planes. We point out that Aki's fractal dimension corresponds to the capacity dimension D0 and may be compared with the correlation dimension D2, obtained from the spatial distribution of earthquakes. By analyzing the actual earthquake catalogue, we calculated the fractal dimension D2 and the b value. Our result does not support Aki's speculation that D0 = 3b/c, but shows, on the contrary, that there is a negative correlation (D = 2.3 − 0.73b) between the b value and the fractal dimension of the spatial distribution of earthquakes in the Tohoku region.

To evaluate the temporal variation of seismicity in the Inner Zone of Southwest Japan before and after the Nankai trough events, we introduced a statistical model and estimated the value of the model parameters. We used the data of disastrous earthquakes to estimate them. Because of the lack of spatially sufficient data, we used data from the 9th century in the case of the northern Kinki region, and in the case of the whole Inner Zone of Southwest Japan only data after the 17th century. The results show that for the northern Kinki region the seismicity has a peak before the Nankai trough events, although there is no significant change before them in the whole Inner Zone of Southwest Japan. The seismicity in the Inner Zone of Southwest Japan increases just after the Nankai trough events. We compared the obtained intensity functions with the recent JMA data from 1885 to 1995. The seismicity seems to have increased in the last 30 years. Using data from this period , we estimated the occurrence time of the next Nankai trough event. Our results show that it will occur in the 2030'S.

in which similar correlation patterns are found. We focus our attention on these patterns as a source of interesting contrasts between the two earthquake groups. In particular, the significant dependence of these parameters on the depth appears to be a key to understanding the correlation pattern for interplate aftershocks, while a different interpretation is made for intraplate aftershocks because no significant dependence on depth is observed.
