Segmental distribution of  -glucosidase, ornithine decarboxylase and polyamines in the human epididymis

Abstract: Regional differences in the total activities of the epididymal secretory parameter, alpha-glucosidase, were demonstrated in the 20,000 g supernatants of human epididymal homogenates. A comparison of the enzymic activities in the supernatants and the washings from 12 one centimetre segments of human epididymides indicated an activity peak in segments 3-4 which appeared to be largely intracellular and which presumably reflects the acidic isoenzyme. A second peak in the caudal region, the segmental localization o… Show more

“…Polyamines are ubiquitous organic polycationnic substances, usually involved in cell replication and differentiation (Thomas and Thomas, 2001). Polyamines have been found in spermatozoa (Melendrez et al, 1992;Rubinstein and Breitbart, 1994), seminal plasma (Oefner et al, 1992) and the epididymis (Purvis and Egdetveit, 1993), as well as in other parts of the male reproductive tract (Calandra et al, 1996). In sperm, polyamines also seem to play a role in motility (Melendrez et al, 1992).…”
