Seedling Establishment of Tall Fescue Exposed to Long-Term Starvation Stress

Abstract: In germinating seeds under unfavorable environmental conditions, the mobilization of stores in the cotyledons is delayed, which may result in a different modulation of carbohydrates balance and a decrease in seedling vigor. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) caryopses grown at 4°C in the dark for an extended period in complete absence of nutrients, showed an unexpected ability to survive. Seedlings grown at 4°C for 210 days were morphologically identical to seedlings grown at 23°C for 21 days. After 400… Show more

“…We noted that the IAA/ABA and GA 3 /ABA ratios, which were strongly positively related to most plant morphological parameters (e.g., RGR, leaf dry weight, root surface area, and root volume; Table 2 ), were obviously increased by MT under CA stress (Figures 5E,F ). Similar results were obtained in plants under other abiotic stresses such as, salinity and cold stress (Huang et al, 2015 ; Pompeiano et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Starch content was only evaluated in the hypocotyls which are the main reserve organs. Starch was extracted and analyzed as described [24] with minor modifications. Hypocotyl samples were ground in a mortar, resuspended in 5 mL of 10 mM KOH and boiled for 1 min.…”
