Seed vigor and germination of facheiro plants (Pilosocereus catingicola (Gurke) Byles & Rowley Subsp. Salvadorensis (Werderm.) Zappi (Cactaceae) at different temperatures

Abstract: Several species of endemic Cactaceae are found in northeastern Brazil, which are important plants to the local fauna and flora; nevertheless, there are only a few studies assessing the germination of this plant genus. Understanding the germination of species native to the Caatinga is essential to subsidize conservation actions for such ecosystem. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of three localities and different temperatures on the vigor and germination of facheiro seeds. The experi… Show more

“…Seedling emergence also differed statistically between ploidy levels, varying from 23 to 44%, in diploid and octaploid cultivars, respectively (Figure 1A). When the emergence is compared with other species of cacti, it is considered low, since research involving facheiro seeds (Pilosocereus catingicola) with fruits harvested in different municipalities in Paraíba, resulted in an emergence percentage ranging from 60 to 80% (Medeiros et al, 2015). However, it is superior to that observed by Guedes et al (2009) when evaluating the germination and vigor of forage palm seeds after treatment to overcome seed dormancy.…”

“…Portanto estudos sobre a germinação de sementes auxiliam na conservação desse recurso natural, possibilitando a obtenção de plantas através da propagação diminuindo a necessidade da coleta de material na natureza (Medeiros et al, 2017). Nesse contexto, a técnica de cultivo in vitro vem sendo empregada com êxito para propagação em diferentes espécies de cactáceas (Civatti et al, 2017;Torres-Silva et al, 2018).…”
