Lianas are plants that depend on support to reach some appreciable height, and they represent an important structural component of tropical forests. Although they predominate in clearings and gaps, some species survive in the understory. Changes in irradiance between these environments can affect leaf morphology and absorption of photosynthetic active radiation (PAR). We had examined the effects of different light regimes on leaf optical properties, chlorophyll content, specific leaf area, and leaf surface morphology in young seedlings of Canavalia parviflora Benth. (Fabaceae) and Gouania virgata Reissk (Rhamnaceae). The seedlings were distributed on workbenches covered by different layers of neutral shade netting, thus creating three levels of light intensity corresponding to about 40%, 10% and 1.5% of solar irradiance. Plants growing in full sun were used as a control. Both species exhibited an increase in reflectance in full sun and alterations in leaf morphology. Reduction in irradiance induced an increase in absorptance (decrease in reflectance and transmittance) in C. parviflora leaves in the green due to higher chlorophyll content. In G. virgata the spectral leaf changes were less observable. However, the efficiency of absorption was more pronounced in G. virgata than in C. parviflora leaves under 40%, 10% and 1.5% photon flux density (PFD). The greater efficiency of absorption in G. virgata was due to a larger specific leaf area (SLA) under these conditions. The adjustments in leaf optical properties can aid these species in overall carbon gain under limited light conditions. Lianas são plantas que dependem de um suporte para atingir uma altura apreciável, formando um importante componente das florestas tropicais. Embora sejam dominantes em clareiras, algumas espécies sobrevivem no sub-bosque. Mudanças da irradiância entre estes ambientes podem afetar a morfologia foliar e a absorção da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa. Neste estudo foram avaliadas as propriedades ópticas foliares, o conteúdo de clorofila, a área foliar específica e a morfologia da superfície foliar de duas espécies de lianas jovens Canavalia parviflora Benth. (Fabaceae) e Gouania virgata Reissk (Rhamnaceae), sob diferentes regimes de luz. Plantas jovens foram cultivadas em bancadas cobertas com sombrites possibilitando intensidades luminosas correspondentes a 40%, 10% e 1,5% da densidade de fluxo de fótons (DFF). RESUMO(Morfologia de plântulas das espécies de Rhynchosia (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) de Roraima, Brasil). Este trabalho tem como objetivos descrever, ilustrar e comparar a morfologia de plântulas das quatro espécies de Rhynchosia (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) ocorrentes no estado de Roraima, Brasil. Todas as espécies estudadas, R. phaseoloides (SW.) DC., R. melanocarpa Grear, R. minima (L.) DC., e R. schomburgkii Benth. apresentam plântulas cripto-hipógeo--armazenadoras, eofilos do primeiro nó 1-foliolados, opostos e com estípulas duplas e livres entre si. Os resultados mostram que a diversidade morfológica encontrada nas plântulas das espécies estudadas permite identificá-las em nível específico. As espécies podem ser distintas entre si pela morfologia da lâmina e comprimento das estípulas do primeiro nó eofilar, bem como pelo número de folíolos e forma e venação das estípulas dos eofilos subseqüentes. Além disso, o trabalho discute a variação morfológica nas plântulas de Rhynchosia e esclarece informações discordantes na literatura sobre plântulas de R. minima e R. phaseoloides.Palavras-chave: Fabaceae, Phaseoleae, desenvolvimento pós-seminal, planta juvenil ABSTRACT (Seedling morphology of Rhynchosia species (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) from Roraima, Brazil). This paper aims to describe, illustrate and compare the seedling morphology of the four species of Rhynchosia (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) that occur in Roraima, Brazil. The studied species, R. phaseoloides (SW.) DC., R. melanocarpa Grear, R. minima (L.) DC., and R. schomburgkii Benth., possess crypto-hypogeal-reserve seedlings, eophylls at the first node that are 1-foliolate and opposite, and double and free stipules. The results show that morphological diversity found among seedlings of the studied species can be used to identify them at the specific level. Rhynchosia species are distinguishable from each other mainly by blade morphology and stipule length at the first eophyll node, as well as by the number of leaflets, shape and venation of the stipules of subsequent eophylls. This work also discusses the morphological variation found in Rhynchosia, and elucidates disparate data in the literature on seedlings of R. minima and R. phaseoloides.

We investigated the characteristics of gaseous exchanges and chlorophyll a fluorescence under different irradiances in two liana species Canavalia parviflora Benth. (Fabaceae) and Gouania virgata Reissk (Rhamnaceae), both of a semideciduous tropical forest of Southeast Brazil. We used cultivated plants growing under irradiances of 100, 40, 10, and 1.5 % of the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Higher net photosynthetic rates (P N ) were observed during early morning under full sunlight. After this, reduced P N values were recorded due to pronounced stomatal closure. In Canavalia, the gas exchange responses diminished concomitant with reduced irradiance. Gouania exhibited a narrower range of response, with high P N values even at 10 % PPFD. Marked reduction of the effective photochemical yield (ΔF/F m ') near midday was observed, followed by increases in the non-photochemical quenching for both species under full sunlight. Despite the common occurrence of these species in open areas of the forest, both were able to maintain relatively high P N in shaded environments. We suggest that lianas present an intermediate physiological behaviour between shade and non-shade tolerant species.
