ABSTRACTThis article presents one of the studies proposed in the doctoral thesis in social psychology entitled "Diets, Culture and Affection: a study of gender and ethnicity". It consists of an exploratory, qualitativedescriptive research, composed by a semi-structured interview. The main objective was to investigate the perception of nutritionists about the factors that influence the process of nutritional education of their patients, residents in a town of Italian colonization, in the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul. Ten nutritionists descended from Italian immigrants were interviewed. The discussion was based on studies on gender and social representations, and the data obtained was submitted to a thematic content analysis. Among the main information found there are the great impact of emotions in the amount and quality of food intake and the direct relation between affection and food, both associated to the symbolisms that food carries in this culture in particular.
