Secondary prevention- an essential component of the comprehensive rehabilitation of patients with heart failure

Abstract: Heart failure is currently a real public health problem due to the extremely high morbidity and mortality of this disease. In this context, cardiovascular prevention measures should be implemented as early as possible. In addition to classic prevention measures, a number of extremely important specific recommendations should be considered: informing patients about their underlying disease, identifying the cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular factors that have led to cardiac decompensation, reducing daily salt… Show more

“…So, they seem to have a predisposition for the phenotype with preserved ejection fraction, a more frequent ischemic etiology, earlier symptoms of HF, lower levels of natriuretic peptides, particular treatment challenges, but also more false-positive diagnoses of HF [8]. Therefore, the treatment of heart failure in this population should not only focus on pharmacological approach, but also on lifestyle changes and including these patients in physical training programs [9]. In Romania, after hospital discharge, heart failure patients are addressed for cardiovascular rehabilitation programs in specialized centers, such as Covasna Cardiovascular Disease Hospital.…”

“…Comprehensive evaluation of the patient's exercise capacity after permanent cardiac pacing, preferably through cardiopulmonary exercise testing, might prove to be an useful tool in the adjustment process of the pacemaker, having as main purposes the reduction of heart failure symptoms and the improvement of the quality of life [17,18].…”

“…These programs vary but in order for them to be efficient they need to be multidisciplinary and comprehensive, similar to rehabilitation programs for other conditions such as diabetes [9,10]. Their goals are to recover (and restore) the physical, social and mental well-being, thus improving the outcomes and correcting the risk factors that influene the incidence (and outcome) of cardiovascular diseases [11,12]. HF has a detrimental effect on daily routine through various physical simptoms, psychological reactions and their treatment, thus lowering the quality of life (QoL) [13].…”
