a b s t r a c tA renewed interest on the impacts of climate change has spurred several studies on climate/health relationships. This study aims to detect and explain any changes in the relationships between climate and mortality in Lisbon from 1835 until 2012. The evaluation of mortality seasonal rhythms over time is based on the 100-Index per decades, annual Winter-Summer ratio, as well as other descriptive statistics. A change in the seasonal rhythm of mortality over the last 177 years was found. In the mid-19th century mortality peaked in summer, whereas in the 1890s and the 1900s there was slight monthly variability. On the contrary, a winter maximum has occurred since the 1940s, although a secondary summer peak of mortality may emerge during the most severe heat-waves. Although long term positive temperature trends were confirmed, no systematic positive mortality trends were found in the last three decades. The results suggest that mortality rhythm changes during the 19th and 20th century are not directly related to climatic reasons alone (except in the case of extreme weather events), but rather to improvements in hygienic, sanitary and nutrition conditions and advances in medicine. However, given the possible increase of summer heat waves in the future, and individuals increasing vulnerability, particularly in urban areas, such secondary peaks of mortality will tend to happen more frequently, unless adaptation of populations to hotter conditions takes place and/or measures are taken to protect people from high temperatures.

Исследования сезонных особенностей заболеваемо-сти и смертности, выполненные в разных странах, показа-ли повышение этих показателей в зимний период [1,2]. Исследования сезонных особенностей заболеваемости и смертности показали наличие избыточной заболеваемости и смертности в зимний период в разных странах, включая Россию. Избыточная смертность ассоциируется с дополнительным экономическим ущербом. Цель исследования -на основе анализа потерь валового регионального продукта оценить социально-экономический ущерб, обусловленный избыточной смертностью в зимний период в трех регионах РФ с различными климатогеографическими характеристиками. Материал и методы. Проведен анализ количества случаев избыточной смерти в зимний период для Ивановской, Саратовской и Архангельской областей в 2006-2013 гг., с последующим анализом экономического ущерба, ассоциированного с избыточной смертностью в зимний период (ИСЗП) вследствие потерь валового регионального продукта. Результаты и обсуждение. Общее число случаев избыточной смерти в зимний период от ССЗ за 8 анализируемых лет в Ивановской, Саратовской и Архангельской областях составило 3,7, 4,6 и 3,1 тыс. соответственно. Среднее число случаев избыточной смерти в зимний период в анализируемых регионах составляло 300-500 в год. Максимальными потери валового регионального продукта (ВРП) оказались в Архангельской области -свыше 880 млн руб. за 8 лет (p<0,0001), а наименьшими -в Ивановской области (364,2 млн руб.). Заключение. Величина экономического ущерба от ИСЗП, обусловленных ССЗ, определяется двумя факторами: количеством случаев смерти и величиной ВРП в регионе. Исследование экономических аспектов ИСЗП может послужить важным обоснованием инвестиций в ее предотвращение. Excess mortality is associated with additional economic damage. Objective. To estimate the social and economic damage caused by excess winter deaths in three Russian Federation's regions with different climatic and geographic characteristics. Material and methods. The number of excess winter deaths in the Ivanovo, Saratov, and Arkhalgelsk Regions in 2006-2013 was analyzed, followed by estimation of excess winter mortality (EWM)-associated economic damage due to losses of gross regional product (GRP). Results and discussion. The total number of excess winter cardiovascular deaths over 8 analyzed years in the Ivanovo, Saratov, and Arkhangelsk Regions was 3.700, 4.600, and 3.100, respectively. The mean number of excess winter deaths in the regions in question was 300-500 per year. The GRP losses were highest in the Arkhalgelsk Region (above 880 mln rubles over 8 years) (p<0.0001) and lowest in the Ivanovo Region (364.2 mln rubles). Conclusion. The excess winter cardiovascular death-associated economic damage is determined by two factors: the number of deaths and the size of GRP in the region. ...
