Seasonal Reproductive Biology and Artificial Propagation of Female African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) After Hormonal Stimulation

Abstract: The use of exogenous hormones to induce final oocyte maturation, ovulation, and spawning has become commonplace in the reproductive protocols for many species. In the present study, African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) were monthly collected from January to December 2011 for studying their monthly reproductive biology. Also, hormonal stimulation was done using ovaprim, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and salmon gonadotropin releasing hormone analog (GnRHa). However, fish (337.2 -718.0 g) were divided into … Show more

“…The males and females of C. gariepinus are easily distinguishable during the adult stage on the basis of genital papillae, which are rounded and protruding in the females while males have long pointed genital papillae. 61 Mature females typically have a swollen and soft belly which is often full of eggs that are released at the slightest abdominal pressure (Figure 2B). These characteristics are good signs of sexual maturity and were therefore used to choose females for the artificial reproduction.…”

“…However, North African catfish production has been marked by scarcity of the seeds problems, caused by the gap between increased market demands which was not followed by increased in seeds supply because the seeds production is still very low. This is because North African catfish are like other tropical fish that breeding seasonally (Saadony et al, 2014), and only breeding during the rainy season (Dadebo et al, 2011).…”
