Seasonal changes of humoral and cellular immune responses to Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) pollen allergens in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) with pollinosis

Abstract: The natural occurrence of Japanese cedar [Cryptomeria japonica (CJ)] pollinosis has been reported in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). The present study was designed to investigate seasonal changes in immunological reactions to CJ pollen allergens in monkeys with CJ pollinosis. Blood samples were collected from six monkeys with CJ pollinosis before and after CJ pollen season. Seasonal changes in specific IgE and IgG to major allergens (Cry j 1 and Cry j 2) were observed before and after CJ pollen season. The … Show more

“…Allergic rhinitis has been reported in an adult female chimpanzee (Halpern et al, 1989;Dumonceaux et al, 1997) and Japanese macaques (M. fuscata) (Sakaguchi et al, 1992(Sakaguchi et al, , 1999. The report of pollinosis in Japanese macaques (Sakaguchi et al, 1992) describes specific serum IgE to allergens from Japanese cedar trees and refers to reports indicating pollinosis in both wild and captive Japanese macaques throughout Japan. The tested monkeys had clinical signs of sneezing, rhinorrhea, pruritus, and epiphora.…”

“…In addition to human CJ pollinosis, sensitivity to CJ pollen has also been found in monkeys 7 and dogs 8,9 . The antigen‐specific responses in monkeys were shown to be similar to those in human patients: positive responses to a crude extract of CJ pollen and the two major CJ allergens were documented using in vivo and in vitro methods such as intradermal testing, IgE measurement, histamine release test and lymphocyte proliferation test 7 . In dogs, sensitivity to CJ pollen allergen was first demonstrated by in vivo tests including Prausnitz‐Küstner testing, intradermal testing and provocation testing 8 .…”

“…There have been a limited number of reports on spontaneous allergic rhinitis in animals. Although reports on spontaneous rhinitis associated with CJ pollinosis in the monkey [14] and cat [5] revealed in vivo and in vitro evidences of type I hypersensitivity to CJ pollen antigen in the affected animals, there has been no report on spontaneous allergic rhinitis attributed to HDM in animals. In the dog, as shown in the present study, AR might be provoked by sensitization to HDM with cytokine production skewed to T H 2-type.…”
