We present a design of a 400-MHz/60-mm all-REBCO nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) magnet (H400) that consists of a stack of 56 double-pancake (DP) coils. With the multiwidth no-insulation technique incorporated, DP coils were wound with REBCO tapes of five different widths, i.e., 4.1, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, and 8.1 mm; DP coils placed at and near the magnet midplane were wound with the narrowest (4.1 mm wide) REBCO tapes, whereas those with progressively wider tapes were placed toward the top and bottom of the magnet, where the "perpendicular field B ⊥ " is at its peak within the magnet. The magnet was designed to be operated under a conduction cooling environment at 20 K. Once successfully completed, the magnet will be installed as an NMR user facility in the Korea Basic Science Institute. Basic magnet performances and major technical challenges were discussed.

The REBCO high-temperature superconducting tape has a pronounced electromagnetic anisotropy. The critical current is strongly dependent on the value of the magnetic field, the magnetic field direction, the temperature, and the stress, and has a significant nonlinear relationship. It is also important to note that screening current effects in superconducting magnets at elevated temperatures lead to a non-uniform distribution of current densities, and thus the inductance of superconducting magnets at high-temperatures is calculated differently from that of normal magnets. This is essential for the design of superconducting energy storage magnets at high-temperatures, especially for the accurate evaluation of the inductance values. To further analyze the variation of the inductance value due to the REBCO screening current, the T-A formulation combined with the magnetic energy density is considered to evaluate the energy storage and inductance values during the excitation of the superconducting coil. The effect of excitation rate, operating temperature, and excitation current on the inductance value is analyzed based on the design of a 5T insulating superconducting coil. The mathematical relation between excitation voltage, contact resistance, and inductance in the magnetic excitation experiment is presented, and the accuracy of the calculated method is verified by comparison with simulation results.

The development of NMR/MRI REBa2Cu3Oy (REBCO, RE = Rare Earth) magnets is undergoing all over the world. However, a screening current-induced magnetic field (SCMF) is a serious problem for NMR/MRI magnets wound with REBCO tapes. The reduction of SCMF is strongly desired, and the estimation of SCMF is also desired at the design stage of REBCO magnets. In order to evaluate a SCMF, a finite element method (FEM) or a boundary integration method is needed so far, and a high-level simulation technique is required. In this paper, we develop an easy method to estimate a SCMF without any high-level simulation technique. In the developed method, an inductance of a winding turn is calculated and then a screening current is estimated according to the magnetic field penetrating into the winding turn. The SCMF is obtained from the estimated screening current. The SCMFs computed by the proposed method were compared with measurements and simulation results of the FEM. The results agreed well, but we can see a large difference. However, the SCMFs by the proposed method are enough accurate so that we know the SCMFs at the design stage without using a high-level simulation technique.
