A simple screening current-induced magnetic field estimation method for REBCO pancake coils

Abstract: The development of NMR/MRI REBa2Cu3Oy (REBCO, RE = Rare Earth) magnets is undergoing all over the world. However, a screening current-induced magnetic field (SCMF) is a serious problem for NMR/MRI magnets wound with REBCO tapes. The reduction of SCMF is strongly desired, and the estimation of SCMF is also desired at the design stage of REBCO magnets. In order to evaluate a SCMF, a finite element method (FEM) or a boundary integration method is needed so far, and a high-level simulation technique is required. I… Show more

“…We compared the simulation and measurement results of the magnet composed of two double-pancake and four single pancake (2D+4S) coils [16,20] with those of a FEM simulation, which is a 2D finite element method with thin approximation method (FEM+TAM) [11,12]. Table 2 and figure 6(a) show the magnet configuration, in which turns of all pancake coils are insulated between turns.…”

“…However, a full resolution model of such NI coils is practically difficult to implement due to the high aspect ratio of the superconductor and the need to consider the currents flowing normal to the conductor's surface. While progress has been made using circuit grid models (CGM) [18,[24][25][26][27], these models lose axial fidelity and cannot simulate the associated shielding currents, and associated stress [28], within the HTS windings [23,[29][30][31].…”
