Scientific Explanation of Phenomenon, Imagination and Concept Formation as Correlates of Students’ Understanding of Physics Concepts

Abstract: Knowledge of physics to many students is described in quantitative terms such as how much scientific vocabulary and how many formulae have been memorized. However, only few students can successfully make connections to apply the scientific knowledge in answering questions in physics. That is, physics students answer questions in relation to their emergent views mainly based on their prior knowledge about everyday experience which is at variance with scientific knowledge in a typical physics classroom. It is ev… Show more

“…Physics is a subject that requires an understanding of concrete and abstract concepts (Ismail et al, 2019). Physics in its use is generally limited to natural phenomena but may produce general laws or basic principles to explain them (Dewi et al, 2019;Madu, 2020). Therefore, physics is necessary and important to study.…”

“…The development and application of physics concepts daily problems are part of the student's learning process [1][2] [3]. Physics is a human activity and must be related to daily life phenomena [4] [5]. However, physics in school tend to be taught using practical formulas in reality [6].…”

“…Physics is in fact one of the subjects that is considered heavy and is avoided by some students because it requires perseverance, seriousness, and a lot of practice (Ana Dhiqfaini Sultan, 2017;Astalini et al, 2018;Puspitasari et al, 2019). Students' understanding of a concept that starts from the wrong concept will certainly be different from the scientific understanding possessed by experts or scientists in the field of physics (Warfa et al, 2018;Maison et al, 2019;Madu, 2020;). Physics learning which is mostly natural phenomena to understand knowledge contextually.…”
