PEG precipitation has limitations of which users of this technique should be aware (5 ), and gel filtration chromatography remains the gold standard. Nevertheless, PEG precipitation remains the most practical approach available for screening for macroprolactinemia. We believe that in the interests of clarity and good laboratory practice, it is time to abandon reporting results as percentage macroprolactin in favor of the absolute post-PEG prolactin concentration, together with an appropriate reference interval. In differentiating between true hyperprolactinemia and macroprolactinemia, this approach will serve to facilitate interpretation of the result, provide more clinically useful information, and enhance patient care.
