Objective: To identify the expressions used by families to describe the experience of living with mental illness. Methods: This research analysis of the accounts of family members is conducted using the software, Analyse Lexicale par Contexte d'um Ensemble de Segments de Texte (ALCESTE), which contains methodology for analyzing qualitative data that is adapted to any area of research in which text-based material is to be reviewed. Results:The analysis provided by ALCESTE formed four classes grouped two by two: Class 2 -onset of illness, and Class 4 -start of treatment, Class 1 -living, and Class 3 -everyday. Conclusion: The moments described by family members were identified by expressions, words and terms used in their narrations. The principle contribution of this study was to bring the language of families used to describe the moments of illness through a methodology of analysis that is more distant from the researcher. RESUMO Considera-se que, quando ocorre o primeiro episódio da esquizofrenia, a vida familiar é interrompida e a sua trajetória de vida pode ser modifi cada. Em vista disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi conhecer a trajetória de famílias nos primeiros cinco anos de convivência com a doença mental, identifi cando o seu processo de ajustamento. A pesquisa está fundamentada no Interacionismo Simbólico. Foram realizadas entrevistas com 23 familiares de 21 portadores de esquizofrenia. A análise foi realizada visando à determinação de uma linha do tempo, que permitiu descrever o processo de ajustamento familiar através de três momentos: Percebendo a Mudança, Diagnóstico e Início do Tratamento, e Seguindo em Frente. Conclui-se que todas as fases apresentadas neste projeto são ricas e podem ser mais exploradas. En vista de eso, el objetivo de este estudio fue conocer la trayectoria de las familias en los primeros cinco años de vivir con una enfermedad mental, identifi cando el proceso de adaptación. El referencial teórico metodológico utilizado se basa en el Interaccionismo Simbólico. Se realizaron entrevistas individuales con 23 familiares de 21 portadores de esquizofrenia. El análisis tuvo como objetivo determinar una línea de tiempo, lo que nos permitió describir el proceso de adaptación de la familia a través de tres momentos: Percibiendo el Cambio, Diagnóstico e Inicio del Tratamiento y Siguiendo Adelante. Concluye-se que todas las fases presentadas en este proyecto son ricas y pueden seguir siendo investigadas.

Impact of pre‐existing mental health disorders on the receipt of guideline recommended cancer treatments: A systematic review

Objective: Disparities in cancer outcomes for individuals with pre-existing mental health disorders have already been identified, particularly for cancer screening and mortality. We aimed to systematically review the influence on the time from cancer diagnosis to cancer treatment, treatment adherence, and differences in receipt of guideline recommended cancer treatment. Methods:We included international studies published in English from 1 January 1995 to 23 May 2022 by searching MEDLINE, Embase, and APA PsycInfo.Results: This review identified 29 studies with 27 being published in the past decade. Most studies focused on breast, non-small cell lung and colorectal cancer and were of high or medium quality as assessed by the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. All studies were from high-income countries, and mostly included patients enrolled in national health insurance systems. Five assessed the impact on treatment delay or adherence, and 25 focused on the receipt of guideline recommended treatment. 20/ 25 studies demonstrated evidence that patients with pre-existing mental health disorders were less likely to receive guideline recommended therapies such as surgery or radiotherapy. In addition, there was a greater likelihood of receiving less intensive or modified treatment including systemic therapy.Conclusions: Across different cancer types and treatment modalities there is evidence of a clear disparity in the receipt of guideline recommended cancer treatment for patients with pre-existing mental health disorders. The effect of pre-existing mental health disorders on treatment delay or adherence is under-researched.Future research needs to include low-and middle-income countries as well as qualitative investigations to understand the reasons for disparities in cancer treatment.

Abstract: From the viewpoint of family psychology, schizophrenia is a serious obstacle to development that affects both patients and their parents. Family-related support should increasingly take into account the issue of the difficult detachment of patients from their parents.
