Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) play significant roles in the daily livelihood of the forest communities’ dependence, local forest management practices, and forest resource sustainability in Papua Province. This research is designed to identify, characterize, and examine the roles of the NTFPs to local communities in Papua Province to be nominated and developed as green economy-based commodities in Papua. Document analysis, literature review, and an interview with the selected respondents are conducted to collect the data. The 7th Forest Management Units (FMU) and the 4th Forestry and Environment Branch across Papua Province will be selected as targeted research areas. The results indicated that the 21 NTFPs-based commodities were identified, and could be developed and promoted as green economy-based products. There are ranging from essential oils, agarwood, noken, mangrove derivate products, honey, coffee, masohi’s bark, sago, ginger-based products, ecotourism, palm peanuts, cocoa, fish-based products, seaweed, and others. Each FMU has candidature products commodities to be developed as green economy products, and the future development program is highly needed to be formulated.

The forestry sector plays an important role in mitigating and adapting to climate change. In the NDC Indonesia Report (2021), forestry and other land use (FOLU) sectors contribute emission based on BAU projected 2030 of 714 Mt CO2e and emission reduction for both unconditional (Counter Measure, CM1) of 17.2% and conditional (CM2) of 24.5%. FOLU emissions correlated with changes in the primary forest to secondary (degradation) and primary/secondary forest to other uses for agriculture, transmigration, plantations and others (deforestation). Due to climate change, the conditions of degradation and deforestation can bring disaster, especially triggered by hydrometeorological hazards that have catastrophic impacts such as floods, flash floods, droughts, erosion, and abrasion due to changes in land cover. Therefore, low carbon development strategies from the forestry sector are needed to reduce climate-related disasters in West Papua.

Biodiversitas 23: 3507-3512. Fuelwood still contributes as an essential energy source for domestic uses especially in rural communities including in West Papua, Indonesia. While several development programs are implemented to enhance the life quality of rural indigenous communities, their implication for fuelwood use is not clear. This study aimed to identify fuelwood tree species used by communities in three villages in West Papua and to, assess its availability prior to the empowerment program and compare it to nowadays after the program based on the community's perspective. A descriptive method with qualitative and quantitative data components was used in this study. Data were collected at predetermined villages representing three ecological zones (i.e., Sakumi, Jamboi and Watitindau) using purposive sampling and semi-structured interviews with community representatives, tribal chiefs and leaders. The results showed that there were 5-7 plant species used as fuelwood, namely Piper aduncum, Casuarina equisetifolia, Rhizophora sp., Gliricidia sepium, Intsia bijuga, Pometia pinnata, Dodonaea viscosa, Homalium foetidum, Syzygium sp. and Muntingia calabura. These all-wood species have a good flame. Some high commercial tree species such as I. bijuga, P. pinnata and H. foetidum are only used in their branches and twigs for firewood. The local communities still use firewood despite the empowerment program since alternative fuel sources are not available or lacking, while the availability of firewood is plentiful. Nonetheless, in the long run, the continuous and extensive use of firewood will put pressure on the remaining trees and forest. Therefore, we recommend sustainably using firewood and replanting several species frequently used as firewood.
