Sawtooth control with modulated ICRH in JET-ILW H-mode plasmas

Abstract: Sawtooth pacing with modulated ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) has been demonstrated to be very efficient in JET-ILW L-mode plasmas (Lerche et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 036027, Lennholm et al 2017 Fusion Eng. Des. 123 535–40), where the main heat source in the plasma centre is provided by the RF accelerated minority ions. In H-mode plasmas with substantial neutral beam injection power, this technique is more challenging since the fast beam particles have a stabilizing effect on the sawteeth, making it mor… Show more

“…The ions accelerated by the electromagnetic waves can reach very high energies and have a strong impact on several physics aspects as shown in JET, e.g. controlling central impurity accumulation, sawtooth frequency control or reduction of instabilities leading to turbulence such as the Ion-Temperature-Gradient (ITG) [31][32][33][34][35][36][37]. Therefore, understanding the broad impact of ICRH on D-T was important, notably in order to distinguish its effects from potential alpha particle effects in D-T plasmas.…”

“…It has a dramatic effect on bulk plasma confinement, resulting in a drop in central density and temperature. They also interact with fast ions, where the sawtooth period is seen to be modified in the presence of fast ions [3][4][5] and, conversely, where the fast ion transport deviates farther from neoclassical theory as shown theoretically and experimentally [6][7][8][9].…”

“…An ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) system can provide power for several tasks [1], experimentally verified on present-day machines: heating and current drive, first wall conditioning [2], plasma start-up, removing of impurities from the core [3,4], controlling sawteeth [5] and current ramp down assist [6][7][8]. The system could be designed to have a high plugto-power efficiency.…”
