Sanitary quality of broiler litter reused

Abstract: Considering the importance of the substrate to bedding in the poultry industry in Brazil, and the enormous pressure on environmental management as to the correct use and management of the waste generated by the production sector, this study aimed to analyze the effect of reuses of two types of litter on sanitary qualities and productive performance of broilers. The study was conducted with litter from 32 different broiler houses, two types of substrates and four cycles of reuses. The litter sanitary quality wa… Show more

“…The litter of wood shavings showed the highest value, 1.32 x10 12 CFU g -1 , which coincides, however, with the treatment of highest moisture content (39.64%). Vieira et al (2015), when studying the sanitary quality of broiler litter, mention that an increase of 1% in the moisture content generates an increase of 11.25 percentage points in the probability of occurrence of Salmonella spp in the coffee husk litter.…”

“…Curiously in our research, poultry litter did not have the high number of resistance when compared with day-old chicken sample. The use of the same poultry litter in subsequent production cycles, when subjected to a sanitary vacuum and a good fermentation process, may result in a low microbial load ( Wei et al, 2013 ; Vieira et al, 2015 ; Waziri and Kaltungo, 2017 ; Gurmessa et al, 2021 ; Moffo et al, 2021 ; Yévenes et al, 2021 ). In Brazil, poultry litter is reused for more than one consecutive batch, and this practice is allowed if sanitary problems have not occurred with the batches housed on the poultry litter to be reused ( Waziri and Kaltungo, 2017 ).…”

“…Due to its high prevalence, resistance to antimicrobials and difficult control, Salmonella Heidelberg has been isolated and reported in Brazil, from poultry and products derived from chicken meat since 1962. Salmonella stands out as one of the main serovars causing infections in humans worldwide, occupying the fourth position among the most isolated ones (Vieira et al, 2009;Vieira et al, 2015). In recent years, a higher incidence of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Heidelberg (S. Heidelberg) has been observed in poultry houses and processing plants by Salmonella control and monitoring programs (Ferrari et al, 2019).…”
