Sanitary conditions of the Goliath grouper Epinephelus itajara in captivity on estuarine environment: case report

Abstract: This study aimed to report the sanitary conditions through the hematological analysis of grouper E. itajara reared in captivity on estuarine conditions. Seven Goliath groupers (1,881.5±1,246.03g) were captured and kept in two tanks located on estuary. After 20 days, fish were collected for morphologic and hemato-physiologic evaluation. Two fish had clinical signs such as hemorrhagic spots and loss of scale due to agonistic behavior. Blood samples were collected, and the hematological parameters (biochemical, e… Show more

“…This economic activity is an alternative for the development of urban aquaculture because it requires little space and generates production with high unit values (Kodama et al ., 2011; Sousa et al ., 2019). Moreover, urban ornamental aquaculture can be carried out in closed water recirculation systems, increasing productivity and avoiding the introduction of pathogens into the system (Paixão et al ., 2020). The success of this activity, however, depends on producing specimens with intense colouring.…”

“…(Paixão et al 2020), sardines(Marçalo et al 2018), carp (Adikesavalu et al 2015, and cobia(Coriolano and Coelho 2012). Scale loss may be due to several reasons, such as contact with other fish during collection(Marçalo et al 2018), agonistic interactions (Paixão et al 2020, or infection such as flectobacillosis(Adikesavalu et al 2015), or parasitosis(Coriolano and Coelho 2012).…”

“…Grouper aquaculture is a promising activity. However, its sustainability depends on controlled reproductive processes and the capacity for the production of high-quality juveniles (Silva et al 2018, Paixão et al 2020. Species with longer larval periods, such as groupers of the genus Epinephelus, are more susceptible to anomalies due to the complex ontogenesis of its skeleton formation (Boglione et al 2009, Russo et al 2011, Sanches et al 2015.…”
