LA-ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICP-MS have been the techniques of choice for achieving accurate and precise element content and isotopic ratio, the state-of-the-art technique combines the advantages of low detection limits with high spatial resolution, however, the analysis accuracy and precision are restricted by many factors, such as sensitivity drift, elemental/isotopic fractionation, matrix effects, interferences and the lack of sufficiently matrix-matched reference materials. Thus, rigorous and suitable calibration and correction methods are needed to obtain quantitative data. This review systematically summarized and evaluated the interference correction, quantitative calculation and sensitivity correction strategies in order to provide the analysts with suitable calibration and correction strategies according to the sample types and the analyzed elements. The functions and features of data reduction software ICPMSDataCal were also outlined, which can provide real-time and on-line data reduction of element content and isotopic ratios analyzed by LA-ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICP-MS.

Bromine and iodine are important tracers for geochemical and environmental studies. In this study, a rapid acid digestion (HNO3 + HF) with ammonia dilution for the simultaneous determination of bromine and iodine in soils and sediments using ICP‐MS was developed. The recoveries of Br and I were controlled by the synergic effect of temperature and time. It took only 15 min at 140 °C for the complete recovery of Br and I in sediment (GSD‐2) and soil (GSS‐24) reference materials, which is a process that needs 2–6 h at 90 °C. A serious loss of Br and I was found at a higher digestion temperature of 190 °C. A 5% v/v NH4OH dilution effectively eliminated the memory effects and stabilised the signals of Br and I. Moreover, ammonia dilution also avoided the corrosiveness of HF on the sample introduction system and torch of ICP‐MS. Tellurium is a more suitable internal standard element than In in the ammonia medium. To avoid the adsorption of residues of dissolution on Te, addition of Te should be carried out after centrifuging the solution. The developed method was successfully applied to determine Br and I in fifty‐three Chinese soil and sediment reference materials. This simple method shows great potential for the rapid determination of Br and I in large batches of geological and environmental samples commonly analysed for mineral exploration and environmental geochemistry studies.

The interest in the study of gallium (Ga) stable isotope fractionation in low‐ and high‐temperature environments has increased significantly in the last few years. However, a unified reference material (RM) is still lacking for the Ga isotope research community, which hinders interlaboratory comparison between different groups. Consequently, certification of Ga isotopic reference materials for interlaboratory comparison is of high priority. In this study, Ga isotope ratio data for ten geological RMs including silicates, shales and ferromanganese nodules, and two pure Ga RMs including NIST SRM 994 and NIST SRM 3119a reported by three different groups, were determined by MC‐ICP‐MS. Sample matrices of geological RMs were separated by a two‐column separation method with the use of AG MP‐1M and AG 50‐X8 resin, separately, and quantitative recoveries of > 99% Ga were obtained for all geological RMs. Instrumental mass bias was corrected by the combined calibrator‐sample bracketing and internal normalisation model. Validation of the proposed method was performed by analysing synthetic solutions. After normalisation of all available δ71Ga data of geological RMs to a single Ga RM, results obtained in our study are in agreement with previously reported results.
