Safety evaluation of alcoholic extract of Boswellia ovalifoliolata stem-bark in rats

Abstract: The safety profile of alcoholic extract of stem-bark of B. ovalifoliolata was investigated in male Wistar albino rats as per OECD guidelines 407. A total of 24 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups of six rats each. Group 1 served as control and was given 0.3% carboxymethylcellulose, groups 2, 3 and 4 were given alcoholic extract of B. ovalifoliolata @ 100, 500 and 1000 mg/kg respectively in 0.3% carboxymethylcellulose orally for 28 days. The animals were observed daily for clinical signs, mortality, … Show more

“…Hence, germinated chickpea could be used as a nutraceutical in postmenopausal condition either alone or in combination with standard antihyperlipidemic drugs. However, the clinical usage of germinated chickpea sprouts would require adequate information on the long-term safety evaluation as per scientific guidelines[ 58 ] and checking for possible pharmacodynamics and kinetic herbal-drug interactions. “… 10 , 27 In addition, oral administration of an alcoholic extract of Boswellia ovalifoliolata stem-bark to male Wistar albino rats at the dose of 0.5 g/kg for 28 days did not result in detectible abnormality. 28 In this report, the patient took the dose equivalent to 0.04 mL/kg body weight/day of the BSGRH with a relative density about 0.9. After 2 years of uninterrupted oral administration, all blood markers for liver and kidney functions remained within normal ranges.…”

“…Furthermore, although the Boswellia papyrifera extracts in overall appear to be effective and safe to administer [ 37 38 39 40 ], identification of the active phytoconstituents is still mandatory. This is important to decrease the probabilities of expected adverse effects and to dramatically increase the prospective extract efficacy when the isolated compounds are used as medication.…”
