Rutin Inhibits Oleic Acid Induced Lipid Accumulation via Reducing Lipogenesis and Oxidative Stress in Hepatocarcinoma Cells

Abstract: Excessive lipid accumulation within liver has been proposed to cause obesity, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and fatty liver disease. Rutin, a common dietary flavonoid that is consumed in fruits, vegetables, and plant-derived beverages, has various biological functions, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. However, a hypolipidemic effect of rutin on fatty liver disease has not been reported. In this study, we examined the effect of rutin on reducing lipid accumulation in hepatic cells. … Show more

“…The benefits of polyphenols in suppressing TG accumulation in hepatocytes have been also reported in previous studies. Wu et al (2011) proved that rutin can significantly reduce lipid accumulation and had a good antioxidant capacity in an oleic acid-induced in vitro model of fatty liver by decreasing lipogenesis and oxidative stress in hepatocytes. The benefit of phenolic compounds on preventing steatosis has also been observed.…”

“…In C2C12 muscle cells, Eid et al (2010) reported that quercetin increased AMPK phosphorylation but not AKT. Rutin has been shown to increase phosphorylation of AMPK and reduce SREBP-1 expression thereby inhibiting hepatic lipogenesis (Wu et al 2011). In another study conducted by Lee et al (2012) rutin and the combination of rutin and quercetin improved glucose uptake and activated AKT and AMPK in hepatocytes.…”

“…20 Sechium edule shoots (SWE) contain a lot of nutritional components, including flavonoids, 21 which are known as powerful polyphenol antioxidants. 17 They are useful as a complementary treatment for arteriosclerosis and hypertension and as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory remedy.…”
