Rule-based Emotion Detection on Social Media: Putting Tweets on Plutchik's Wheel

Abstract: We study sentiment analysis beyond the typical granularity of polarity and instead use Plutchik's wheel of emotions model. We introduce RBEM-Emo as an extension to the Rule-Based Emission Model algorithm to deduce such emotions from human-written messages. We evaluate our approach on two different datasets and compare its performance with the current state-of-the-art techniques for emotion detection, including a recursive autoencoder. The results of the experimental study suggest that RBEM-Emo is a promising a… Show more

Moreover, people adjust their social lives using social media platforms since in-person communication was discouraged during COVID-19 [55].…”

“…1 The emotion flow from an excerpt from 'Cinderella'. A single passage can contain a dramatic change in emotions Liu et al [5] proposed the use of the modified Plutchik's wheel of emotions (consisting of 8 primary emotions) to predict the emotion conveyed in a fairy tale passage [6]. Although the dataset is quite large and multi-class labels were used, their work was performed at the passage level (averaging 6.24 sentences per passage), which may not precisely capture the complex emotional flow of a storyline.…”
