ROS-mediated cytotoxic activity of ZnO and CeO2 nanoparticles synthesized using the Rubia cordifolia L. leaf extract on MG-63 human osteosarcoma cell lines

Abstract: In the present scenario, the synthesis and characterization of zinc oxide (ZnO) and cerium oxide (CeO) nanoparticles (NPs) through biological routes using green reducing agents are quite interesting to explore various biomedical and pharmaceutical applications, particularly for the treatment of cancer. This study was focused on the phytosynthesis of ZnO and CeO NPs using the leaf extract of Rubia cordifolia L. The active principles present in the plant extract were liable for rapid reduction of Zn and Ce ions … Show more

“…The compound adsorption capacities of NPs could be further improved by functionalization [ 217 ]. For instance, adsorption capacity of SiO 2 NPs towards quercetin was higher upon TiO 2 functionalization in comparison to non-functionalized and decyl group functionalized SiO 2 NPs due to possible binding of quercetin to the metal oxide [ 208 ]. This adsorption capacity increased linearly with surface coverage of TiO 2 , emphasizing the correlation between functional surface and quercetin adsorption.…”

“…The study suggested increased ROS production as a mechanism of CeO 2 NPs cytotoxicity [27]. This observation was confirmed in another study which proved that zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) could be harmful to MG63 as they triggered ROS production [28].…”

“…Several in vivo studies are carried out with plant crops like rice [79] , wheat, sunflower, pumpkin [80] , alfalfa, corn, tomato [81] , kidney bean [82] , radish [83] , [84] , cucumber [85] , Rubia cordifolia [86] to study the uptake of nanoceria. Results have shown the highest uptake in roots as compared to other parts of plants like leaves shoots etc.…”
