Abstract

Distributions in Carian Cities in the Roman Period In this study of Carian cities in the Roman period, prestige competitions of the local elites as well as the euergetic services and favors done within them are presented. Also presented are the place and importance of these distributions in their social structures .The aim is to identify and document the quality and quantity of distributions made by private individuals in the cities of Caria in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. In relation to this custom, the priorities and privileges of the elite class are defined and the positions of the individuals who perform such distributions are determined. This is done from an urban sociological and economic perspective. Topics such as the quality and quantity of distributions, earliest and latest examples, and the periods and cities where these distributions most frequently occurred are highlighted. The inscriptions which give evidence about distributions were researched and a catalogue of inscriptions was compiled. The catalogue contains 46 inscriptions from Carian cities such as Aphrodisias,
