Roll‐to‐Roll fabrication of large area functional organic materials

Abstract: With the prospect of extremely fast manufacture of very low cost devices, organic electronics prepared by thin film processing techniques that are compatible with roll-toroll (R2R) methods are presently receiving an increasing interest. Several technologies using organic thin films are at the point, where transfer from the laboratory to a more production-oriented environment is within reach. In this review, we aim at giving an overview of some of the R2R-compatible techniques that can be used in such a transfe… Show more

“…3,4 TFT performance improves significantly upon a minimization of the number of grain boundaries in organic thin films as these boundaries act as energy barriers for percolating charges. [5][6][7] Additionally, the patterning of the semiconductor film is required to 3 achieve low off currents in electrical devices.…”

“…The reaction mixture was cooled to about 40 C, and then slowly added to 150 mL of methanol and 15 mL of 1 N aqueous HCl solution. The precipitated polymer was dissolved in small amount of CHCl 3 and added into 150 mL of methanol. The resulting polymer was further purified by Soxhlet extraction using methanol and hexane, then dried in vacuum to give dark solid.…”

“…[1][2][3] Great interest has been focused on thiophene-based p-conjugated organic materials, due to their promise as organic semiconductors. [4][5][6] In recent years, polyselenophenes have been developed that have narrow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gaps, high ambipolar charge transport characteristics, and solar cells.…”

“…5,6 Solutionphase processing methods such as inkjet or screen printing provide a route to facile, low cost fabrication of these devices. 7 However, the nanostructure of conjugated polymer lms deposited using such methods will be inuenced by the conformation of the polymer species present in solution. Similarly, the semiconductor-like optical and electronic properties of conjugated polymers also depend explicitly on the physical conformation of the polymer chains.…”
