Role ofHelicobacter pyloriinfection in gastric carcinogenesis: Current knowledge and future directions

Abstract: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) plays a role in the pathogenesis of gastric cancer. The outcome of the infection depends on environmental factors and bacterial and host characteristics. Gastric carcinogenesis is a multistep process that is reversible in the early phase of mucosal damage, but the exact point of no return has not been identified. Therefore, two main therapeutic strategies could reduce gastric cancer incidence: (1) eradication of the already present infection; and (2) immunization (prior to or du… Show more

“…Bacterial infections have been linked to cancer, mainly through epidemiological studies. The most widely accepted link is between H. pylori , which was the first bacterium to be declared as a carcinogen, and gastric cancer (Sokic-Milutinovic et al, 2015). However, other associations have been made, such as S. enterica as a causative agent of gallbladder cancer (Scanu et al, 2015).…”

“…H. pylori je danas jedina bakterija koja je prepoznata kao kancerogen I klase i izaziva 800,000 smrtnih slučajeva godišnje. Blagovremena eradikacija bi trebalo da zaustavi progresivno propadanje gastrične mukoze i smanji rizik od nastanka karcinoma želuca [9]. Lečenje infekcije ovom bakterijom podrazumeva kombinovanjem antiulkusne i antiinflamatorne terapije.…”

“…Helicobacter pylorus (H pylori) has been the well‐established and cardinal pathogen of many gastrointestinal diseases. It causes gastritis, peptic ulcer, and even gastric cancer . In Taiwan, epidemiology study has demonstrated the prevalence rate of H pylori infection is 54% on average and it imposes a great burden on healthcare nationwide as well as worldwide .…”
