Role of Alkaline Activator in Development of Eco-friendly Fly Ash Based Geo Polymer Concrete

Abstract: Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is conventionally used as primary binder to produce concrete. The amount of carbon dioxide released during the manufacture of OPC and the extent of energy required to produce OPC are the matters of environmental concern in view of global warming and the poor availability of power. Fly-ash, abundantly available byproduct of coal fired thermal power stations is posing great environmental problems through its disposal. Fly ash with combination of alkalis like sodium hydroxide and so… Show more

“…The reduction in CO 2 emissions for geopolymer system is due to the use of minimum processed natural minerals and industrial wastes to form the binding agents. ETIC 2016 using this waste material as a component to produce the binder helps to mitigate the environmental problems and provides new environmentally friendly green concrete [25]. Table 3 shows the result of the environmental impact of various geopolymer materials and as reported by Habert et al [26], the main environmental impacts that might be affected by the three types of geopolymer materials are global warming potentials and human toxicity.…”

“…Joshi &Kadu [19] prepared the alkaline activator using commercially available Na 2 SiO 3 liquid and NaOH pellets which contain Na 2 O = 14.61%, SiO 2 = 25.18% and water = 59.99%. The alkaline solution was prepared with NaOH concentration varying from 8M to 16M and the mass ratio of Na 2 SiO 3 to NaOH varied from 1.75 to 3.0.…”
