River runoff modeling in the European territory of Russia

Abstract: The paper describes river runoff modeling for a plains region of the European territory of Russia (ETR), as well as a prediction for ungauged drainage basins. The study of river runoff is one of the key research objectives in determining the patterns of sediment yield formation. Among many other zonal factors, river runoff is considered to be the main factor in sediment yield formation in a humid climate. In this study, modeling results for the entire European territory of Russia and various landscape zones ar… Show more

“…The environmental conditions that accompany soil erosion in this vast territory are diverse. We created and published a dedicated online geoportal called 'The River Basins of the European Territory of Russia' (http://bassepr.kpfu.ru/ Access on: 15.September.2021) that displays the environmental conditions of the territory (terrain, climate, hydrology, soils, land use, human-induced impact) [44].…”

“…Along with hydrological and hydroecological monitoring of water bodies in specific places and at the outlet, it is no less essential to monitor natural and economic situations, particularly agroenvironmental parameters within river basins [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34]. Therefore, a set of water quality indicators with a unique range of values should be produced for different river basins with due account for specifics of economic management and physiographical, geological, topographical, and climatic conditions [35].…”

“…The order structure of river basins determines the hierarchy of territorial monitoring levels [35][36][37]. The eighth-order and higher river basins can be used for the national level.…”

“…Creating reservoirs is known to develop and support several industries: i.e., electricity, agriculture, water transport, fisheries, recreation, and tourism. At the same time, their creation leads to a fundamental restructuring of natural systems: river water flow and regime, bedload, and suspended sediment yield are changed, a unique microclimate is created and landscapes are transformed [1][2][3][4]. The intensity of exogenous processes acting on the shore and banks increases by orders of magnitude due to the water surface area increase.…”
