Risk Analysis and Safer Layout Design Solutions for Bicycles in Four-Leg Urban Intersections

Abstract: The road safety of vulnerable users is a current issue; in densely populated areas, the use of alternative and light mobility vehicles is growing in popularity, and their users conflict with vehicles having larger dimensions and masses. This study focuses on the risk analysis of collision between bicyclists and motorized vehicles in urban intersections. Twenty-five urban four-leg intersections, with and without bike paths, were considered in order to identify the conflict points, calculate their hazardousness,… Show more

“…As a consequence, traffic engineers and urban planners have increased their focus on vulnerable road users [6][7][8][9][10]. Accordingly, traffic safety countermeasures have been developed in urban areas to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists [11,12]. The most important factor in pedestrian injuries from vehicle collisions is the impact speed [13,14].…”

“…One such factor is the emotional state of the cyclist, which was taken into account in one of the studies conducted in Finland [29]. However, the majority of studies focus on infrastructure elements such as intersections [30]. In the context of this study, such an approach is not optimal, as the objective is not to analyse individual infrastructure elements and their relationship with the risk of an accident for the cyclist.…”

“…Francesca [17] considered road and environmental conditions, and proposed a methodology for the calculation of urban branch road safety. Lee [18,19] integrated a comprehensive framework of pedestrian walking and fatalities and conducted the hotspot identification.. Giuseppe [20,21] focused on the risk analysis of collision between cyclist fatalities and vehicles in urban intersections. Traffic analysis zones (TAZs) are also used in road traffic accidents as an analysis method.…”
