The switch from hunting wild meat for home consumption to supplying more lucrative city markets in Amazonia can adversely affect some game species. Despite this, information on the amounts of wild meat eaten in Amazonian cities is still limited. We estimated wild meat consumption rates in 5 cities in the State of Amazonas in Brazil through 1046 door‐to‐door household interviews conducted from 2004 to 2012. With these data, we modeled the relationship between wild meat use and a selection of socioeconomic indices. We then scaled up our model to determine the amounts of wild meat likely to be consumed annually in the 62 urban centers in central Amazonia. A total of 80.3% of all interviewees reported consuming wild meat during an average of 29.3 (CI 11.6) days per year. Most wild meat was reported as bought in local markets (80.1%) or hunted by a family member (14.9%). Twenty‐one taxa were cited as consumed, mostly mammals (71.6%), followed by reptiles (23.2%) and then birds (5.2%). The declared frequency of wild meat consumption was positively correlated with the proportion of rural population as well as with the per capita gross domestic product of the municipality (administrative divisions) where the cities were seated. We estimated that as much as 10,691 t of wild meat might be consumed annually in the 62 urban centers within central Amazonia, the equivalent of 6.49 kg per person per year. In monetary terms, this amounts to US$21.72 per person per year or US$35.1 million overall, the latter figure is comparable to fish and timber production in the region. Given this magnitude of wild meat trade in central Amazonia, it is fundamental to integrate this activity into the formal economy and actively develop policies that allow the trade of more resilient taxa and restrict trade in species sensitive to hunting.

A lei brasileira proíbe interações homem x fauna sem autorização formal, exceto o abate para saciar a fome de pessoa necessitada. Criminalizam--se, assim, diversas práticas tradicionais (caça, captura, consumo, comércio e criação de animais silvestres), ligadas a estilos de vida e sociabilidades divergentes do padrão estabelecido. Reconhecendo imprecisões na delimitação das categorias jurídicas "legal" e "ilegal", o artigo critica sua absorção pelo discurso científico e propõe substituí--las por categorias remetidas à racionalidade do agente que interage com a fauna: próxima ou distante, em sucessivos graus, da lógica de mercado. Ao revelar a diversidade de situações até então indistintamente rotuladas como crimes ambientais, tais categorias dariam visibilidade a grupos sociais marginalizados, viabilizando sua valorização como atores legítimos na interlocução com a pesquisa científica e com programas de manejo participativo do ambiente.PALAVRAS--CHAVE: desenvolvimento sustentável, legislação ambiental, patrimônio cultural, povos tradicionais, sociobiodiversidade. HUNTING, CAPTURE AND USAGE OF WILD FAUNA IN BRAZIL AS ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMES AND SCIENTIFIC TABOO: REFLECTION ON THEORETICAL CATEGORIES ABSTRACTBrazilian law prohibits any formally unauthorized human x fauna interaction, except the slaughter of wild animals to satisfy the hunger of the poor. A set of traditional activities (hunting, capture, alimentary consumption, sale and possession of wild animals), underlying specific modes of sociability and lifestyles that diverge from the established rules, is, thereby, criminalized. Recognizing the impreciseness of the juridical categories "legal" and "illegal", the paper criticizes their absorption by the scientific discourse, and proposes to replace them by categories based on the rationality of the agent interacting with the fauna: close or far, in successive degrees, from the market logic. By revealing the diversity of situations so far indistinctly seen as crimes against nature, such categories give prominence to marginalized groups, promoting their recognition as legitimate actors in the interlocution with scientific research and with participatory environmental management programs.

Behavior, management and welfare of Neotropical mammals with zootechnical interest. Farming and ranching of wild animals to sustainably meet increasing demands for animal protein in developing countries, albeit controversial, is a reality in several countries. Therefore, we need to develop production systems that promote the welfare of these animals. In this review paper, we described the challenges faced by Neotropical mammals maintained in captivity. We showed how the motivation absence or predictability in captive environment, such as the fixed time for feeding, affects the animals. Against these, we propose the use of some techniques to detect problems and to promote the welfare of Neotropical mammals. We also highlighted the importance of using knowledge of social behavior to achieve success in their production with less stress for the animals. We also showed that the behavioral plasticity of some species can be used to establish management practices that improve the feasibility of farming wild mammals without compromising their welfare. Moreover, we pointed out some gaps in our knowledge, especially in descriptions of normal/abnormal behavioral patterns. We concluded by proposing that some of the discussed techniques, such as the use of feeders that promote animal activity and the use of bioacoustics as stress indicator, should be improved and tested in other wild species maintained in captivity with different aims, such as zoos, conservation centers and, especially, on commercial farms. Resumo.A criação de animais não convencionais para atender a crescente demanda por proteína de origem animal de países em desenvolvimento, apesar de ser controversa, é uma realidade mundial. Desta forma, é preciso estabelecer sistemas de produção que promovam o bem-estar desses animais. Neste artigo de revisão, foram descritos alguns dos desafios que animais neotropicais enfrentam ao serem mantidos em cativeiro, tais como os efeitos da ausência de motivação e da previsibilidade no ambiente onde são criados, como horários fixos de alimentação, que comprometem seu bem-estar. Para contrapor, foram mostradas algumas técnicas para detectar problemas e para promover o bem-estar de mamíferos neotropicais com potencial zootécnico. Também foi reforçada a importância do uso de conhecimentos sobre o comportamento social para alcançar o sucesso na sua produção respeitando suas características e necessidades comportamentais. Por outro lado, foi mostrado que a plasticidade comportamental, exibida por algumas espécies, pode ser aproveitada para estabelecer práticas de manejo que viabilizem a atividade, sem comprometer seu bem-estar.Adicionalmente, foram apontadas as lacunas em nosso conhecimento, especialmente os relativos aos comportamentos típicos e/ou anormais.
