Review on landfill leachate treatment methods

Abstract: In most countries, sanitary landfill is the most commonly used method to eliminate municipal and industrial solid waste, but landfill produces seriously polluted landfill leachate. Landfill leachate contains many kinds of pollutants: such as refractory organic compounds and heavy metals. In general, there are three methods to treat landfill leachate: leachate transfer, biological processes, chemical and physical methods and membrane processes. Membrane processes can be divided into four types: microfiltration … Show more

“…Microorganisms that are crucial to the biodegradation of organic waste assist in eliminating the contaminants from landfill leachate during the biological treatment process. The biological procedure also eliminates leachate with a significant amount of BOD [8]. Treating the landfill leachate through a biological process can be done by following different processes like aerobic, anaerobic, nitrification/denitrification, the ANAMMOX process.…”

“…Under aerobic circumstances, microbial decomposition produces carbon dioxide and sludge, whereas anaerobic conditions yield carbon dioxide and methane. Nevertheless, one of the fundamental disadvantages of biological techniques is that they are ineffective at removing heavy metals (Anqi et al, 2020;Luo et al, 2020;Torretta et al, 2016).…”

“…Successful application of several hybrid techniques is reported for the efficient removal of nitrogen and heavy metal from leachate. These approaches are supposed to lower treatment costs by combining several different techniques (Anqi et al, 2020;Lippi et al, 2018;Luo et al, 2020;Negi et al, 2020).…”
