RETRACTED ARTICLE: The Association of Interleukin-16 Gene Polymorphisms with IL-16 Serum Levels and Risk of Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract: In summary, the present study provides the first evidence that the rs11556218T/G and rs4072111C/T polymorphisms of IL-16 gene were significantly associated with increased risk of MS. These results suggest that rs11556218T/G, rs4072111C/T, and rs4778889T/C polymorphisms of IL-16 may contribute to susceptibility to MS through increased expression of IL-16 levels.

“…Previous studies have not observed an association between rs4072111 and osteoporosis [40], osteosarcoma [42], endometriosis [34] and Graves' disease [50]. However, this polymorphism was a risk factor for systemic erythematic lupus among Chinese [49] and multiple sclerosis in Iranians [45].…”

“…Similar results were found in two previous studies conducted in 2005 and 2018 in an Iranian adult population with PD [ 23 , 24 ]. An association was also not found between this SNP and other diseases, such as asthma [ 43 , 44 ], osteosarcoma [ 42 ], multiple sclerosis [ 45 ], endometriosis [ 46 ] and autoimmune thyroid disease [ 47 ]. On the other hand, this polymorphism was associated with an increased risk for Graves' disease [ 48 ] and systemic lupus erythematosus [ 49 ].…”

“…This SNP was previously identified as a marker candidate for aggressive prostate cancer [64], although this was not confirmed for an African American population [46,65]. This polymorphism was also correlated with better prognosis for chronic lymphoid leukemia in an English population [66], associated with the risk of liver cancer [40], colorectal and gastric cancer [67,68], autoimmunity [49,50], endometriosis [51], and knee osteoarthritis [52,53].…”

“…in Caucasians [47], diabetes mellitus [48], autoimmune diseases [49,50], endometriosis [45,51], and knee osteoarthritis [52,53]. A meta-analysis published in 2019 focusing only on renal cancer association studies also found no association between rs4778889 and rs11556218 and this disease [54].…”

“…So far, many efforts have been conducted to study the genetic architecture of MS in different populations like Iran. 4,[12][13][14][15] http://ijnl.tums.ac.ir 04 April However, these attempts have only been able to identify a small proportion of the causes of disease, highlighting the need to assess non-genetic factors as well as the interplay between environmental and genetic factors. In addition, genetic effect alone does not justify the low MS concordance rate between monozygotic twins.…”
