“…While taxi drivers often argue that regulations should apply equally to ride-share drivers who operate in the same market, many researchers emphasize that the current taxi industry regulations are obsolete (Miller 2016; Posen 2015; Rauch and Schleicher 2015). Researchers have pointed out that taxi drivers are at a disadvantage because ride-sharing companies employ an automatic price surge algorithm that taxis cannot compete with due to regulated fares (Harding, Kandlikar, and Gulati 2016), and taxi drivers are required to pay fees of licensing and leasing while Uber and Lyft drivers easily use their own vehicles without additional expenses (Farren, Koopman, and Mitchell 2016). We point out that there are actually many more intricate regulations and practices that impinge on taxi drivers’ ability to control their livelihoods and ultimately to compete with Uber.…”
