Resveratrol ameliorates experimental periodontitis in diabetic mice through negative regulation of TLR4 signaling

Abstract: Aim: To investigate the therapeutic effects of resveratrol (RSV) on periodontitis in diabetic mice and to explore the underlying mechanisms in vitro. Methods: Experimental periodontitis was induced in db/db mice by ligature application of porphyromonas gingivalis. The mice were treated with RSV (20 mg/kg, po) daily for 4 weeks. Alveolar bone loss, proinflammatory cytokines and TLR4 expression in the gingival tissue were measured. Cultured gingival epithelial cells (GECs) were used for in vitro studies. The tra… Show more

“…Resveratrol mediated inhibition of CSI‐induced increases in bone loss seen in EP agree with previous studies done by our research group and others . Reduced periodontal damage related to use of resveratrol is high if not solely related to its effects on levels of IL‐17, IFN‐γ, IL‐4, and TH17/TH2 response .…”

“…CSI is a major risk factor for periodontitis, and it has been related to higher prevalence of edentulism and more advanced periodontal attachment loss 21 , 22 . RESV is a polyphenolic compound that has the capacity to modulate osteo‐immunoinflammatory host response 10 , 16 , 23 . To the best of the authors’ knowledge, as no information was available regarding impact of RESV on periodontitis in presence of CSI, for the first time this study investigated impact of RESV on progression of EP in rats subjected to CSI.…”

“…It has been shown in an animal model of experimental periodontitis (EP) that resveratrol almost completely inhibits the progression of periodontal bone loss and decreases the levels of specific proinflammatory cytokines . In light of these findings, it has been suggested that resveratrol could conceivably prove to be a useful therapeutic agent for patients who have periodontitis.…”
