Resveratrol attenuates oxidative stress during experimental periodontitis in rats exposed to cigarette smoke inhalation

Abstract: Objectives This study aimed at investigating the effect of the systemic administration of resveratrol (RESV) on oxidative stress during experimental periodontitis in rats subjected to cigarette smoke inhalation. Material and Methods Experimental periodontitis (EP) was induced in 26 male Wistar rats by the insertion of a ligature around one of the first mandibular and maxillary molars. The animals were assigned randomly to the following groups: cigarette smoke inhalation (CSI; 3 times/d, 8 minutes/d) + resverat… Show more

“…In the future, other anti-inflammatory and antioxidant modulators such as resveratrol may be used in combination with calcitriol to prevent periodontal tissue destruction for periodontitis prevention or treatment. 67 Calcitriol has been shown to play a pivotal role in the decrease in periodontal inflammation during the progression of periodontitis, and hence, can ameliorate experimental periodontitis in diabetic mice. 68 After calcitriol treatment in a mouse model of diabetes mellitus, Tcell protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 2 (PTPN2), an intracellular tyrosine-specific phosphatase, was shown to inhibit inflammation in diabetes mellitus-associated periodontitis via dephosphorylation of protein substrates in the JAK1/STAT3 signaling pathway.…”

“…1,10 It is also known that cigarette-smoking delays wound healing by inducing a state of oxidative stress in tissues and enhancing the production of proinflammatory and toxic endproducts in oral and systemic tissues. 11,12 These explanations have been associated with compromised outcomes of surgical and nonsurgical oral therapeutic interventions in individuals smoking tobacco-products compared with never-smokers. 13,14 However, outcome of MD with and without adjunct PT in the treatment of PiM among cigarette-smokers and never-smokers remains unreported in literature.…”

“…Furthermore, outcomes of oral surgical interventions are undermined in tobacco smoking users compared to nonsmokers . Tobacco smoking creates an oxidative state of stress in the gingival tissues; and chemicals such as carbon monoxide and nicotine increase the production of advanced‐glycation‐end products and it's deposition in oral tissues . Binding of AGEs along to their receptors worsens periodontal inflammation .…”
