“…Few WNF human cases were then seen between 1963 and 1964; no cases have been recorded in the area since 1965. Correspondingly, a much lower frequency of seropositive humans (5%) was revealed in the area between 1975 and 1980 (74). This is a low seroprevalence when compared with 21% to 41% seropositive inhabitants recorded between 1963 and 1965 (39).…”

“…A few equine cases were observed from 1963 through 1965, but no cases have been recorded in Camargue since 1965. Concurrently, a much lower frequency of seropositive animals (2% of 99 horses) was revealed in the area later, between 1975 and 1980 (74); this is a low seroprevalence rate when compared to the mean 30% seropositive horses in this region between 1963 and 1965 (39). In September 2000, about 20 horses with WNV encephalitis were observed in Camargue again (H. Zeller, personal communication).…”

“…During a serosurvey (hemagglutinationinhibition assay) conducted in Camargue from 1975 to 1979, a low frequency of antibody response against WN virus was observed in 235 human samples (4.9%) and 99 horse samples (2%) (21). In contrast, a high frequency was observed against Tahyna virus (31% in humans and 9% in horses), a Bunyavirus belonging to the California group that induces febrile illness with central nervous system signs and has been reported in many countries in Europe as well as in Africa and Asia (22).…”

“…The first WNV outbreak in horses in France occurred during the summer of 1962 in the Camargue region, a wetland area characterized by very diverse bird communities (Jourdain et al, 2007a). A second epizootic in the Camargue occurred in 2000, with 76 equine cases (Murgue et al, 2001 Rollin et al, 1982). The second study, which was done shortly after the 2000 epizootic in horses, reported the presence of WNV neutralizing antibodies in Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), Yellow-legged Gulls, and Common Magpies (Pica pica; Hars et al, 2004).…”
